Located in the island of Negros in Western Visayas is one of the protected natural parks in the Philippines – the Northern Negros National Park (NNNP)

The NNNP was formerly known as the Northern Negros Forest Reserve (NNFR) which was established in 1935 through Proclamation No. 798 signed by then Acting Governor General Joseph R. Hayden.
It was declared as a protected area through Presidential Proclamation No. 895 signed by former President Gloria M. Arroyo in August 15, 2005 pursuant to Republic Act 7586 or the NIPAS Act of 1992 – AN ACT PROVIDING FOR THE ESTABLISHMENT AND MANAGEMENT OF NATIONAL INTEGRATED PROTECTED AREAS SYSTEM, DEFINING ITS SCOPE AND COVERAGE, AND FOR OTHER PURPOSES.

On June 22, 2018, President Rodrigo R. Duterte signed R.A. No.11038 of 2018 Known as Expanded National Integrated Protected Areas System or ENIPAS Act of 2018 which declares Protected Areas and Providing for Their Management, Amending for This Purpose Republic Act No. 7586, Otherwise Known as the “National Integrated Protected Areas System (NIPAS) Act of 1992” and for Other Purposes (Department of Environment and Natural Resources – Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office, 2017).
The NNNP is home to rich flora and fauna. Among them include sixty-seven (67) endemic species of amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals that have been documented to occur within NNNP. This includes threatened species that are endemic to the Negros-Panay biogeographic region, such as the Walden’s hornbill (Aceros waldeni), White-winged cuckoo Shrike (Coracina ostenta), Visayan Flowerpecker (Dicaeum austral), Flame-templed Babbler (Stachyris speciosa), the Negros Bleeding Heart (Gallicolumba keay) among others.

Furthermore, it also home to two Negros-Panay endemic species of large mammals, the critically endangered Visayan Warty Pig (Sus cebifrons) and the endangered Philippine Spotted Deer (Rusa alfredi).
This rich biodiversity in the NNNP is proof that it needs to be protected. As these organisms are threatened, it is our duty as citizens to protect the environment which provides for us the ecosystem services that are essential for our survival.
